Frances Humphrey Lecture Series “The Epics of Rencesvals” by Dr. Xabier Irujo

February 27 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

High in the windswept Pyrenees, the pass of Rencesvals witnessed two defining moments in history. In 778 and again 824, Basque warriors fought against imperial forces of Charlemagne-led France and the Carolingian Empire, respectively. The Kingdom of Pamplona would emerge, with Eneko Aritza crowned as the first Basque king, heralding a 1,000-year sovereignty. These moments, forged in blood and resistance, echo through history, reminding us of the enduring power of identity, the distortion of legend, and the darker truths of conquest. Dr. Xabier Irujo is a professor and the Director of the Center for Basque Studies at University of Nevada, Reno. This lecture will be presented in person. Admission is $10 for adults, members and children ages 17 and under are free.
